Working from home equals…FREEDOM BABY! Right?
Well, not so fast. You do have more freedom but you also need more discipline and a way to keep your energy up. Cue letdown music.
Don’t be sad Zooey. There’s still hope.
Today I’ve got 5 tips that can help you keep up your energy and creativity while also staying disciplined enough to complete all the things.
Forward To Wonderful Energy on your Work From Home Day…
1.Liquid Fuel
You thought I meant coffee, right? Was it the heading or the gif?
Actually, while I do love my cup of the rich delicious brown stuff, I’m drinking a cup now in an awesome emoji mug while exploring a great class on Creative Live and writing this post, what can really help is the good ol WATER.
Yep drinking your H2O is one of the best things you can do throughout the day to keep your energy and focus high. Coconut water and herbal tea can be great too.
I know it means more bathroom visits but at least you are on a work from home day. And according to the Washington Post, even a little dehydration can impair your focus and motor function. And you are going to need your motor function for the next tip…
2.Dance Breaks!
Go ahead and dance like no one’s watching, because you’re in your home office after all. This is one of the perks. I personally do this and my schnauzer and terrier go crazy. They think their mom has lost her mind but love it and the energy in the room goes way up.
It only takes a few minutes until I feel re-energized and ready to sit at the computer again.
It does not have to be a dance break. You could do some speed cleaning, water the plants, etc. Just be sure you have the discipline to put a time limit on the break. I get a lot of housework done in little sprints like this throughout the day. You will actually be much more productive if you get away from the computer every little bit. And it is better for your eyes and your body to get up and move!
3.Eat Healthy Food
Working from home can mean you have more time to cook a healthy lunch, but so often I still don’t want to take the time out of my day to do it. Or, I end up just kind of grazing and snacking. Do you do this on your work from home day?
But a good, clean lunch can help you shoot through the afternoon without that carb and sugar overload slump.
To make it easier, you could try meal prepping a couple of days a week so you don’t have to think about what you will eat at mealtime every work day. Life changing!
You could even make a party out of it and have a friend or two come over one day a week bringing different ingredients and making enough for all of you to have a few already prepped lunches for the week. Or meal prep with your kids and significant other if you have them.
Or you could go with a service like Real Eats that delivers healthy, fresh meals to your door. These meals stay fresh in the fridge for 7 days sealed and you can prepare them in 6 minutes.
4.Go Outside or Bring Outside In
There is something about good old beautiful nature that makes us feel more alive. Where I live it has been cold and rainy. The outdoors is not looking very inviting. But if you can get out for a short walk or just sit in a chair in the sunshine. It’s a great way to boost your energy back up. Instead of taking your phone with you and checking emails, try just being for a few minutes.
Listen to the sounds. Look around you. Close your eyes and breathe. Take a moment for yourself.
If you cannot get out or just don’t want to, you can bring nature to you with some beautiful office plants. No green thumb?
The real things help purify the air in a way that fake plants just can’t so find ones that are easy to care for.
Palms and succulents are my office faves. Hang them, place them around the floor, or put them on your desk. If you do place your plants in pots on the floor, be careful that they are not toxic to pets and kids.
5.Map It Out on Your Work From Home Day!
When your energy and focus is waning, a brainstorm session could help. I like to mind map. I place the project I am working on in the center and then just start writing ideas and to do’s all around that center with different color markers.
You could also use a white board or sticky notes. Brainstorming this way can reignite your motivation and help you come up with new ideas, while also organizing and refocusing on the ones you already have in the works. A bullet journal is another way to focus and brainstorm.
It’s your turn!
