With the 2013 remake of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work has been catapulted back into the spotlight. It seems to be staying there with everything from Gatsby themed galas to weddings. As the hashtag #thegreatgatsby got to trending, the book rose to the top of many a book club reads.
A new craze always presents an opportunity for marketers and I love seeing classic literature revived. After all, being a writer is not easy, and I’m rooting for us all!

As Fitzgerald said himself,
“Writers aren’t people exactly. Or, if they’re any good, they’re a whole lot of people trying so hard to be one person.”
Writing and publishing has become a whole lot easier these days, but it also means that it is harder to stand and that you have to wear a lot of hats. The quiet intellectual type may be a fabulous writer, but could totally bomb out when it comes to marketing their work. And, although it’s true, that a few get lucky and their work markets itself, better not left to chance.
So, all in fun, I discovered that just maybe one of Fitzgerald’s characters holds some marketing wisdom for us writers to glean from. Have a look…
