Living abroad, in South America, at the moment, I do not have the opportunity to hop on over to the office store, the Dollar Tree, or Home Depot for cheap office supplies. This means I have to get a bit creative to make my home office appear the way I want it to- clean, bright, and inspiring.
I adore mood and motivation boards and had seen wire mesh boards on Pinterest and thought- Whoo Hoo DIY Project! Since there are plenty of farm animals around, I knew I could find the wire. So, I went to the store and picked up a meter for $3 dollars and some change.
DIY Home Office Wire Mesh Mood Board
If you like the industrial look, you could leave the wire as is, but I decided to paint mine gold. You could also choose a unique pop of color like turquoise if that is more your flavor. I decided to paint my piece before flattening it out and found that following the wire horizontally across and then vertically covered better than painting in sections. I put newspaper down to avoid golden grass. It only took a few minutes to paint!
The can of spray paint = $3.34 plus tax. (Gold was a bit more than flat colors.)
I let the paint dry, then placed the wire on the floor, flattening it out. I left a slight wave because I liked it that way. I then set it atop my desk and used clear command hooks to anchor the top. This part may not be necessary, but I wanted to be sure it would not tip forward.
You can see that I used wire with a rectangular grid, but you may have more options available. Decide if you would like larger or smaller squares, rectangles…sometimes you can even find octagon shaped mesh. Just keep in mind the size of the clips you will be using and how they will fit.
I added a string of lights, that I already had, to the top and used clothespins to attach pictures. I used regular sized clothespins, but the tiny craft ones would be great if you have them available. I added fashion magazine covers for inspiration. Honestly, I prefer Interior Design Magazines, but I have had these covers, in an inspiration file, for a long time, because I liked the colors and fonts used. The wonderful thing about this board is that you can easily change the pictures for different projects or looks.
Here is a daytime shot and an evening shot of how it looks with the lights:
This project cost between $8 and $10. If you go with a smaller board or use supplies already in your garage, you could recreate this even cheaper. I got more use out of the paint by spraying my pencil organizer while I was at it.
It’s amazing what a little paint can do to update items you already have!
What do you think? Ready to try this project? Give it a go and leave me a picture of your creations in the comments or tweet them to me @lorihil. I would love to see what you come up with.
