It seems that people love to see other people’s morning routines.
I get it. It’s inspirational and gives you ideas to up your own morning game. I love a great morning routine. Anything to make me feel like my life is somewhat together.
Living abroad, I have a different situation than many. I work from home and my husband works outside of the home so we have to make mornings work for both of us.
Today, I will share our morning routine for those of you who are trying to make it work with one work from home person and one working outside of the home person or if you’re just curious 😉
A little Background
We live in Cuenca Ecuador. My husband is from Ecuador and I moved here around 7 years ago. We have been married for almost 2 years. No children yet. Just two fur babies.
I would love for you to use our routine as inspiration for your own but always create a routine that works for you. No one knows what your mornings need better than you.
It is important to note that nothing is perfect and all the things in our routine do not always happen. But, when our night before routine and our morning routine follows this outline, we just have better days.
Our morning Prep starts the night before…
The Night Before
I do not like to wake up and see unfinished business and dirty dishes from the day before so sometime between dinner and our nightly reading time there is a quick cleanup for me and a quick work prep for my husband.
I wash up dinner dishes, wipe down kitchen counters, fold any laundry that is not finished, put away blankets, dog toys, etc. Doing tasks like this only takes a few minutes if everything is kept up regularly and it feels so much better to wake up in the morning and come downstairs to a clean kitchen and living room. It helps you start every new day off fresh.
Some night before tasks you could include:
- Quick tidy
- Prep coffee or teapot
- Make a To-do list for the next day
While I am doing a quick cleanup, my husband is working on preparing what he needs to leave for work the next day. He chooses and lays out the clothes he will wear. Packs his chef uniform and anything else he needs for his work bag. Makes sure his keys, wallet, bus card, etc. are on our entry table so he can grab and go after breakfast.
We try to make sure these tasks are done after we have had time together for dinner, debriefed for the day, and before we watch a show, read, stretch, pray, etc. to be calm when bedtime comes.
Different work. Different schedules.

My dean in college used to call it “Hitting the deck running.” You know the mornings. When you jump up and rush around and end up late and feeling behind and stressed all day. No one enjoys that.
We like to start our mornings with peace. It goes something like this…
5:50 am Wake up. We set the alarm for 10 minutes before 6 because waking up takes a few minutes. Let’s be real, waking up is hard. Bixby lets us know the time and the weather for the day. Thanks, Samsung.
6 am We pray together and then move from our bed to the two chairs in our bedroom. For me, it is important to get out of bed to really wake up. We get in the light too by turning on lamps or opening the curtains. If you really struggle waking up, washing your face also helps.
6 am – 6:35 We spend this time reading and writing quietly. It is a great time to read, write, pray, and reflect. I use a prayer journal but you can also write your goals, dreams, lists, mind map or whatever you like. Have you tried the Rise Up Victorious Devotionals and the Bible App?
Miracle Morning is a great resource. I read it and shared it with my hubby. I like the one for Entrepreneurs, but there is one for writers– which I am also reading, one for couples, etc. They’re great to help you develop a morning routine focusing on the specific areas in which you want to grow.
*The original Miracle Morning is available with Kindle Unlimted if you have a membership.
6:35 am – 6:45 This is when we fit in a super short workout to get the blood flowing. It’s a bonding experience too as we give each other high-fives and encouragement. Sometimes we go for a short Tabata but our favorite workouts are Lucy’s 7-minute challenges.
We go through periods where we skip this step, but we’re back on it now because we feel so much better when we include a quick workout with our mornings!
6:45 am – 7:00 I get our fur babies from their beds in the other room and let them out to potty. Then they get breakfast.
During this time my husband gets ready for work while I make warm lemon water for us, coffee, and prep his breakfast. It’s a short time which is why it is so important for me to have the kitchen clean and ready the night before.
7 am – 7:15 We sit down at our dining room table. My husband eats and we both drink coffee with a quick chat and listening to a prayer channel on YouTube or some praise music. I like to wait and eat later.
We squeeze in these last few minutes together then he brushes his teeth, grabs his things, and he is off to work by 7:20 am
7:15 am – 8 I get the hubby out the door, wash up dishes, and plop down on the couch with my fur babies to check emails and prep for the workday.
8 am My mom lives right next to us and also has 2 dogs. Three days a week we take all of our fur babies walking together.
I’m going to be honest, despite many believing that living abroad must be like a constant paradise, it can be very, very hard. But, one thing that is just wonderful about where I live is how close I am to a beautiful river walk.
On the days we are not walking at 8 I usually watch training or inspirational videos on YouTube for 30 minutes or so. Either way, I can be in the home office by 8:30 to 8:45.

It sounds like a lot to pack into a short time and it is but it is enjoyable and gets our days started off well. I know this routine would not work for everyone, but I hope it gives you the inspiration to build your own morning routine.
Next, I want to check out Good Morning Good Life!
Try to find someone that has a similar lifestyle as you that is rocking their mornings for the best inspiration. If you have a newborn, find a YouTuber sharing their newborn parent’s morning routine. Have multiple kids, find one rocking that! Mom of Ten anyone?!
