Do you need to get out of a rut?
Ready to become a rut slayer?
Yep, I thought so!
You know how it goes. Kind of like this…
It’s the same thing every day. Day in…day out.
Well, it’s time to break the cycle, my friend. Whether you work in the office or freelance, whether you are single or connected, whether you are an analytical or creative, we all need a change of pace from time to time.
Here are 5 Ways to Get Out Of A Rut:
1.Switch That Alarm Music
In that Groundhog Day Clip, Bill Murphy woke up to You Got Me Babe, over and over again. When was the last time you changed your alarm clock music or sound? Switch up and see if you wake up more refreshed and enthused. Also, try changing up your playlists. Listen to some music you don’t usually listen to or rediscover some old favorites.
Try exploring music by mood. Try something playful and energetic.
2.Take A New Route
Always go the same way to work? Try a different route. Changing up your directions can have a refreshing effective. This works for taking a different route on your morning walk or jog too! See some different scenery, pass some different people, be inspired. Slay that directional rut!

3.Revisit What You Want
You have dreams, but are they the same as they were a few months ago? It’s time to think big picture. Often, when we are in a rut, we have lost sight of why we do what we do…the end goal. Whittle down your goals to their ultimate finale. Are you working just to pay the bills? Dig deeper. At the end, you are more likely seeking security and freedom, aka happiness. Revisit the greater purpose and write it down, somewhere prominent, as a reminder.
4.Evaluate The Feels
How do you feel now? Drained, overwhelmed, stressed?
How do you wish to feel? Enlightened, invigorated, vibrant?
Ask yourself- “What would it take to get me there? What small step could I take today?” If you truly listen for the answer, you may be surprised at the little things that are revealed. Little things you can do, today, to feel happier.
5.Take a “Me Day”
You may feel like this is not possible in your busy schedule. You may not be able to take a whole day, but what about a couple of hours? Make it a priority. Remember that you can be a much better you to others if you are energized and taken care of. Sometimes, to be our best, we just need a break, a time to step back and reflect.
It’s amazing what your heart will tell you if you give it some free time.

Bonus tip to get out of a rut and experience more happiness: Watch a child. They live free of ruts in pure happiness once their needs are met. They constantly learn and grow.
For human beings, simply put, the default state is happiness. If you don’t believe me, spend a little time with a human fresh from the factory, an infant or toddler. Obviously, there’s a lot of crying and fussing associated with the start-up phase of little humans, but the fact is, as long as their most basic needs are met—no immediate hunger, no immediate fear, no scary isolation, no physical pain or enduring sleeplessness—they live in the moment, perfectly happy.”

I was totally stuck in a rut and I just changed my wake up song and took a couple days off work. I’m starting to feel better and more alive again. Great suggestion I really enjoyed reading your post.

Great suggestions! I especially like”change the alarm music”. Thinking about how long we have the same tune waking us up, sowmetimes its the same one for years. It’s funny how little things like that can make a huge difference. Thanks for the advice.

Changing up the small things is so simple, but sometimes we don’t think about it! Thanks Gladys!

Great tips.. for me, I am in a rut with my job right now because I don’t have that much to do [hence why I’m blogging atm] and when I don’t feel like I have a lot to do I don’t feel as needed or like I am reaching a goal, have a purpose. I am the kind of person who needs to constantly be working on a goal to feel energized and happy. I graduated with my degree in sociology but now am going back for my vet tech degree. So that gives me more motivation in my week while my current job is just a temporary thing until I get there! But I also tend to get too caught up in the end result and it distracts me from appreciating the every day “little things”

Happens to us all from time to time Shannon! Best of luck and I hope you feel joyful in your calling soon!
